Step by step
- Get a quote from an SEAI-registered installer. You need their name and SEAI ID for the application. SEAI's advice: shop around for quotes, and get a written contract with the works, prices, timing, payment terms and warranties.
- Apply. Online with your MPRN, the installer's details, the house type, the grants you're applying for and the year built and first lived in. By post, the offer comes within 5 working days.
- Accept the offer within 30 days, or apply again. With it come the Declaration of Works and the Request for Payment form.
- Book the work. Only now. Every outside wall is filled.
- Post-works BER. A registered BER assessor rates the home after the work. SEAI pays €50 towards it.
- Sign and send. You, the assessor and the installer sign the Declaration of Works. Send it with the Request for Payment form, and a Tax Clearance Certificate if you got more than €10,000 in grants in the calendar year.
- Get paid. Usually 4 to 6 weeks after SEAI has the forms. SEAI may inspect, and if anything needs redoing, the installer comes back and payment waits.
Check your cavity wall grant
Four quick taps. You see your grant as you go, then what the job typically costs after it, the BER and your next step. Your number is only asked for at the end, if you want a price.
A semi-detached built before 2011, no earlier wall grant: a €1,300 grant, and the job typically costs €1,585, so about €285 is left to pay.
How this is worked out
SEAI pays a fixed cavity wall grant for each house type, and a higher fixed amount to homeowners on certain welfare payments and to landlords with a HAP or RAS tenant. The typical cost is the median price of cavity wall insulation for your house type across thousands of grant-funded jobs, and the post-works BER is its median price less its own grant. Your installer prices your walls after a look: it's a guide to plan with, never a quote. SEAI decides every grant.
Have these ready
- Your MPRN: the 11-digit number on your electricity bill
- The installer's name and SEAI ID
- The house type and the year built and first lived in
- For the higher rate, proof of the payment, or of the HAP or RAS tenancy
